The British Army used the Scammell Pioneer tank transporter for many purposes during the war. The trailer was permanently attached to the tractor unit and could not be detached like the trailers on modern tractor units. Thanks to the folding loading ramps, a tank could be loaded onto the trailer either under its own power or using a winch, which the tractor unit had available for towing inoperable vehicles.
