Information about the original:
The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the only turreted fighter aircraft ever to serve with the RAF. It was built on the philosophy that an aircraft armed with even just a turret—one packed with machine guns—should be capable of infiltrating a bomber formation and causing chaos there, while also being able to defend itself against attacking enemy fighters.
During the first encounters with the Defiant during the Battle of Britain in 1940, enemy pilots were taken by surprise, and the Defiant performed relatively well. However, the Luftwaffe soon discovered its weaknesses, particularly the absence of any forward-firing cannons, and so it was reassigned to night missions, where it performed noticeably better.
