Information about the original and the model:
When the Japanese Zero entered service for the first time in 1940, it was undoubtedly the most advanced naval fighter aircraft in the world and quickly earned a reputation as a formidable dogfighter. In its first engagements, it demonstrated its full effectiveness—its pilots achieved an almost unbelievable victory ratio of 12:1 against their opponents.

In 1940, when the Wehrmacht launched its campaign across Europe, little attention was paid to developments in the Far East. After years of rearmament and modernization, the Japanese Navy boasted some of the most advanced naval aircraft in the world, including the outstanding Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

This long-range naval fighter was to spearhead Japan’s expansionist ambitions throughout World War II, and in the early years of the war, it was indeed unbeatable in the Pacific theater.

The Zero also quickly earned a formidable reputation in aerial combat, and Allied pilots soon learned to avoid slow, twisty dogfights with this beautifully balanced aircraft. However, American pilots soon managed to develop tactics that no longer played into the Zero’s strengths, and they began to score their first victories.

With the advent of newer fighters, the A6M Zero’s weaknesses began to show, particularly the pilot’s insufficient armor protection and the absence of self-sealing fuel tanks in the wings. Using the “boom and zoom hit and run” tactic (a steep dive, a surprise attack, and a rapid climb back to a safe altitude), the Americans finally began to defeat the dreaded Zeros.
