1/72 JA-37 Viggen
The Special Hobby 1/72 JA-37 Viggen is a plastic model kit of a second-generation Swedish fighter aircraft, designed to be assembled. Compared to previous versions of the Viggen, the JA-37 features an extended fuselage and a more powerful engine. The kit contains eight sprues of plastic parts, a sprue of transparent parts, a colour instruction booklet and decals for three aircraft — including an anniversary version with a red vertical stabiliser decorated with a horseman motif. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
The JA-37 Viggen is a Swedish multi-role fighter aircraft developed as part of the extensive SAAB 37 Viggen programme, the aim of which was to provide Sweden with a fully domestically produced, modern and combat-ready air force independent of foreign suppliers. The designation JA refers to the aircraft’s primary role — interception and air combat (Jakt-Attack). Compared to earlier variants of the Viggen, such as the AJ-37, which was designed primarily for attacking ground targets, the JA-37 featured an extended fuselage, a more powerful Volvo Flygmotor RM8B turbofan engine and upgraded avionics with a pulse Doppler radar, enabling it to engage effectively at medium range. The Viggen made its mark on history with its distinctive aerodynamic design featuring a delta wing and a forward canard, which gave it exceptional take-off and landing characteristics — the aircraft could even operate from modified road sections, which was a key part of Swedish defence doctrine.
According to the manufacturer, this Special Hobby 1:72 scale kit is the most accurate and detailed model of the JA-37 in this scale. The kit contains eight sprues of plastic parts and one sprue of transparent parts, a colour instruction booklet and decals for three different aircraft. One of these is an anniversary aircraft with a striking red vertical stabiliser adorned with a rider motif — a typical example of Swedish ceremonial or farewell liveries, which are among the most attractive themes in the modelling community. For those interested in a higher level of detail, the manufacturer also offers supplementary sets, masks and figures with a ladder, which allow the kit to be further enhanced. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
