1/48 Boulton Paul Defiant NF.1

The Boulton Paul Defiant was one of the unconventional projects of the British Fighter Air Force at the beginning of World War II. Unlike conventional fighters with fixed armament in the wings or fuselage, the Defiant was armed exclusively with a rotating four-barrel turret located behind the pilot, manned by a second crew member. This concept was based on the assumption that the turret armament would allow enemy bombers to be attacked from various angles without having to manoeuvre the entire aircraft into firing position. However, in the daily fighting of the Battle of Britain, the Defiant proved too slow and vulnerable to modern Luftwaffe single-seat fighters, which were able to attack it from the front or from below, where it had no defences.

Real success came only with the transition to the night fighter role. The Defiant NF.1 (Night Fighter) version was equipped with AI Mk IV radar, which allowed the navigator in the turret to search for enemy bombers in the dark. The Defiant proved itself in this role during the Blitz of 1940-1941, when German night raids threatened British cities. The two-man crew, combination of radar and powerful turret armament made for an effective night defence tool until the Defiant was gradually replaced by more powerful types such as the Bristol Beaufighter and de Havilland Mosquito.

The 1:48 scale Airfix kit depicts a night version of the NF.1 with 113 parts and medium difficulty suitable for modellers with some experience. The model features a detailed cockpit with two seats, a distinctive swivel turret with Browning .303 machine guns, finely engraved paneling and the option to build with the turret cover open or closed. The night version featured matte black paint with minimal markings, providing room for the subtle highlighting of panels, wear and operational details typical of night operations. The package does not include the paint or adhesives needed for assembly.
