A later Intruder variant
The A-6 Intruder entered service in the mid-1960s as a carrier-based attack aircraft for strikes against ground targets. In U.S. Navy service, it replaced older types such as the A-1 Skyraider and A-3 Skywarrior. The design was defined by its rugged airframe and side-by-side cockpit for the pilot and weapons officer.
The A-6E was the most developed version of the type, combining improved avionics with updated attack systems. In TRAM configuration, it gained laser target designation capability that further enhanced its effectiveness in all-weather combat missions.
Weapons and operational use
The aircraft could carry a substantial weapons load on its wing pylons, including conventional bombs, Paveway laser-guided bombs, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and HARM anti-radiation missiles. This version of the Intruder also saw active combat during Operation Desert Storm, flying from both land bases and U.S. Navy carriers.
