The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I is one of the most famous fighter aircraft in aviation history. It was designed by Reginald J. Mitchell at Supermarine as a fast, single-engine fighter with an elliptical wing that gave it exceptional agility and low drag. It first flew in March 1936 and entered the RAF arsenal in August 1938. It was powered by a twelve-cylinder liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine of approximately 1,030 hp, which enabled it to reach speeds of over 580 km/h. Armament consisted of eight 7.7 mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings.
The Spitfire Mk.I gained its greatest historical fame in the summer and autumn of 1940 during the Battle of Britain, when it faced Luftwaffe aircraft in one of the decisive engagements of World War II. While the Hawker Hurricane formed the backbone of the defence, concentrating primarily on German bombers, the Spitfires were deployed in preference against Messerschmitt Bf 109Es, against which they could match their performance and agility. Their performance at higher altitudes was crucial to the course of the battle. The Spitfire became a symbol of British resistance and remains one of the most famous aircraft in world history.
The Eduard 1:48 scale kit is a limited edition kit that offers a comprehensive basis for building a faithful model. The plastic parts are complemented by photo-etched parts for fine detail, masks to facilitate accurate masking when painting, and decals for 11 different markings, allowing the model to be built as a specific machine from the Battle of Britain era. Also included is a 152-page A4 Battle of Britain Spitfire Mk.I book, covering the technical development of the aircraft, the changes in camouflage and markings during the conflict, pilots' equipment and a detailed guide to building the model - a valuable resource for modellers and history buffs alike. The package does not include the paints or glues needed for assembly.
