During World War II, various combinations of anti-aircraft armament appeared on German submarines. Some Type IX submarines, as well as older Type VII submarines, were equipped with 20 mm Flak-Vierling quadruple anti-aircraft gun mounts. Flak-Vierlings were also mounted on various other German Navy vessels and on Wehrmacht ground vehicles.
