We are thrilled to introduce our latest 3D Printed Detail Set specifically designed for the hot new kit on the market – the Eduard 1/72 Spitfire Mk.V and his later variants!
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V utilized 20mm Hispano Mk.II cannons in its most common versions, primarily the Mk.Vb and Mk.Vc, which had distinct wing configurations and associated cannon installations.
Spitfire Mk.Vb
The "early" or initial production Spitfire Mk.V aircraft largely used the Type B wing (or B armament), which combined both cannons and machine guns.
- Armament: The standard fit was two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 Browning machine guns.
- Installation: The cannons were housed in the outer wing bays, resulting in distinct, long fairings or blisters on both the upper and lower wing surfaces to accommodate the ammunition drums and feed mechanisms.
- Ammunition: The B wing typically carried 60 rounds per cannon.
Spitfire Mk.Vc
The Mk.Vc introduced the "universal" or Type C wing, designed to accept various armament combinations, including an all-cannon fit.
- Armament: The wing could theoretically house four Hispano cannons, but this was rarely implemented in practice due to weight concerns. Most Mk.Vc aircraft were fitted with the same standard armament as the Mk.Vb (two cannons and four machine guns).
- Installation: The C wing featured larger, more bulged fairings on the upper wing surface compared to the Vb, providing internal clearance for the belt-feed mechanisms (rather than drums). The outer cannon positions, if unused, were simply faired over with a small stub.
- Ammunition: The C wing offered a significant increase in ammunition capacity for the cannons, holding up to 120 rounds per gun.
