1/48 Weserflug P.1003/1 WWII German VTOL aircraft - Amusing Hobby

In the late 1930s, German designers began looking for new ways to increase the flexibility of fighter aircraft. Weserflug came up with a bold design for the P.1003/1, which was to be equipped with two BMW 801 engines mounted in nacelles on folding wings. These nacelles could be rotated upwards, making the aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing. The project was thus ahead of its time and foreshadowed later aircraft designs with tilt engines.

The P.1003/1 was conceived as a multi-purpose machine that could operate from small areas or field airfields. Its armament was to include guns and bombs for attacking ground targets. However, technical difficulties, the complexity of the design and the outbreak of war meant that the project never progressed beyond the stage of drawings and studies. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating example of experimental thinking and the search for unconventional solutions in the German aircraft industry.
