The Bell P-39 Airacobra was an American single-engine fighter with an unusual concept - the engine was located behind the cockpit in the middle of the fuselage, which allowed the incorporation of a powerful 37mm cannon into the propeller axis. While this design complicated operations and limited performance at higher altitudes, it proved so popular at low and medium altitudes, where most of the fighting on the Eastern Front took place, that it became one of the Soviet Air Force's most popular types. Under the Lend-Lease program, the Soviet Union received over 4,700 P-39s - about half of the total production - and it was in Soviet hands that the Airacobra achieved its greatest combat success. The aircraft was prized for its agility, ruggedness, and devastating gun firepower, which was effective not only against aerial targets but also against light armored vehicles.

The P-39 was flown by some of the most prominent Soviet aces. Aleksandr Pokryshkin, the second most successful Soviet pilot with 59 confirmed aerial victories, referred to the Airacobra as his best machine and a large proportion of his kills were achieved in this type. Grigory Rechkalov, the most successful Soviet ace with 61 victories, also flew the P-39 as part of the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment. Both pilots became symbols of Soviet aviation during the most difficult period of the war - from Stalingrad to Kursk to the final operations of 1945.

The 1:48 scale Hobby 2000 kit is a repackaging of the proven Hasegawa molds that have long been considered a solid base for building the P-39. The included Cartograf decals - an Italian manufacturer renowned for printing accuracy, color saturation and excellent adhesion - offer five variants of Soviet machines with distinctive printing schemes, victory emblems and Guard insignia typical of elite Soviet units. Also included are camouflage stencils to facilitate accurate paint application on the cockpit and undercarriage wheels. The 1:48 scale is considered in the modelling world as an ideal compromise between detail and the resulting size of the model. The package does not include paint or glue needed for assembly.
