1/48 Marauder Mk.III, WWII RAF/SAAF Bomber
ICM 1/48 Marauder Mk.III is a plastic kit of the British and South African version of the American B-26F bomber, which was delivered to the RAF and SAAF in two hundred pieces. The Mk.III was based almost directly on the B-26F, but differed in its wire front undercarriage, modifiedrear gunnery and some specific details used by the Allied air forces. The 1/48 scale model captures the distinctive features of the late Marauders deployed in Italy and other Mediterranean operations.
The Martin B-26 Marauder bomber was designed as a fast, modern twin-engine machine for tactical support of the Allied forces and underwent a series of modifications during the war, which gradually improved its stability and operational characteristics. The B-26F variant, built at the Middle River factory, introduced a significant change in wing angle of attack, new vented intakes for the fuel tanks, and redesigned nose glazing. It was on this type that the British version, designated Marauder Mk.III, was built, forming a series of 200 aircraft with serial numbers HD402 to HD601.
Marauder Mk.III differed from the basic B-26F in only a few details - all machines used a wire front wheel for the myand the rear gunnery range received a cover modification where the original Plexiglas material was replaced with a fabric cover. Some sources also mention the use of British type sights, which were more in keeping with RAF standards.
The Mk.III aircraft served with the 14th and 39th Squadrons of the RAF and with the South African Air Force in units of the 12th, 21st, 24th, 25th and 30th Squadrons. They became an important part of Allied operations in the Mediterranean, particularly in support of the invasion of Italy, where their speed and carrying capacity provided reliable tactical support to ground forces.
