CMK 1/48 Lewis Machine Gun (two pieces - with ring/fly and reflector sights) / for Airfix Lysander kit is a resin kit containing two Lewis machine guns in 1:48 scale with different types of sights. Included are a ring/fly sight and a reflector sight that match the historic Westland Lysander. The accessory is designed to increase the detail and historical accuracy of the Airfix kit. The package does not include the paint or adhesives needed for assembly.
The Westland Lysander was one of the most distinctive British aircraft of World War II, although its role was different from that of fighter or bomber types. Designed as an Army co-operative aircraft for reconnaissance, liaison and co-operation with ground forces, it excelled in its ability to operate from short and improvised areas. It was this characteristic that later predestined it for covert missions - particularly the transport of agents and material to and from occupied Europe. The Lysander was equipped with a Lewis defensive machine gun, operated by an observer/gunner in the rear cabin. The Lewis machine gun, originally designed during World War I, remained in British service in the 1930s and 1940s and was standard defensive equipment on many aircraft.
CMK's 1:48 scale resin add-on features two Lewis machine guns with different sight types, allowing the modeler to select the historically appropriate variant to suit a particular Lysander version or period of deployment. The ring/muzzle sight is a classic mechanical sighting device, while the reflector sight was a more modern variant that facilitated rapid sighting of the weapon on target. Both types correspond to the actual equipment used on Lysanders in operational service. The accessory is designed for the Airfix kit and replaces the less detailed plastic parts, bringing a higherA higher level of detail particularly in the barrel, cooling jacket, magazine drum and sights themselves.
When working with resin, it is advisable to wash the parts in warm water with a drop of detergent before gluing to remove any separator residue, and lightly roughen the surface with fine sandpaper for better adhesion of the glue. The Lewis machine gun can be accented with a different shade of metallic colour to the surrounding aircraft structure, or by adding subtle wear at areas of frequent contact. The magazine drum can be tinted a darker color to emphasize depth. The package does not include paint or adhesives needed for assembly.
