1/48 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Early Prod. JG 54 „Grünherz“ Basic Kit.

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, nicknamed the "Dora" or "Langnasen-Dora" (Long-nosed Dora) because of its extended, inline-engined nose, represented an advanced development branch of the successful Fw 190 series. While the original A to F versions used the BMW 801 radial engine, the D version switched to the Junkers Jumo 213 inline twelve-cylinder engine, which provided better high altitude performance and a higher top speed. This change was in response to the growing need to counter the Allied bombers accompanying the fighters, which were operating higher and faster. The Fw 190D-9 entered service in late 1944 and quickly gained the respect of both Luftwaffe pilots and adversaries alike - combining outstanding performance with the proven handling and ruggedness of the basic Fw 190 design.

The Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grünherz" (Green Heart) was one of the Luftwaffe's elite fighter formations, with a rich history ranging from fighting over France over the Eastern Front to the defence of the Reich in the final phase of the war. The green heart emblem on the side of the fuselage was a recognizable feature of the unit, which became famous for both successes and heavy losses in the late stages of the conflict.
