1/48 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Early Prod. JG 54 „Grünherz“ Basic Kit.
MiniArt 1/48 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Early Prod. JG 54 "Grünherz" Basic Kit is a plastic model of a WWII Luftwaffe fighter aircraft. The kit represents an early production version of the D-9 type in the designation Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grünherz" (Green Heart), one of the most famous Luftwaffe fighter units. Included are decals for 2 variants of the markings with typical late war camouflage. The 1:48 scale offers a good ratio between detail and size of the model. The package does not include paint or glue needed for assembly.
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, nicknamed the "Dora" or "Langnasen-Dora" (Long-nosed Dora) because of its extended, inline-engined nose, represented an advanced development branch of the successful Fw 190 series. While the original A to F versions used the BMW 801 radial engine, the D version switched to the Junkers Jumo 213 inline twelve-cylinder engine, which provided better high altitude performance and a higher top speed. This change was in response to the growing need to counter the Allied bombers accompanying the fighters, which were operating higher and faster. The Fw 190D-9 entered service in late 1944 and quickly gained the respect of both Luftwaffe pilots and adversaries alike - combining outstanding performance with the proven handling and ruggedness of the basic Fw 190 design.
The Jagdgeschwader 54 "Grünherz" (Green Heart) was one of the Luftwaffe's elite fighter formations, with a rich history ranging from fighting over France over the Eastern Front to the defence of the Reich in the final phase of the war. The green heart emblem on the side of the fuselage was a recognizable feature of the unit, which became famous for both successes and heavy losses in the late stages of the conflict. The deployment of the Fw 190D-9 to JG 54 represented an effort to maintain combat capability against the numerical and technological superiority of the Allies. The early production version of the D-9 was characterized by specific design details that changed over the course of production - these included the type of engine cowling, exhaust systems, antenna masts, and landing gear details.
The 1:48 scale MiniArt kit captures these early characteristics and offers decals for two variants of the JG 54 markings with typical late war Luftwaffe camouflage (usually a combination of grey, green and possibly brown on the upper surfaces with a light blue underside). The Basic Kit means a focus on clean builds with an emphasis on precision of shapes and key details without excessive amounts of small extras - suitable for builders who prefer a straightforward build with the ability to custom detail as required. The 1:48 scale is popular for aircraft due to the ample room to highlight paneling, paint wear, exhaust marks and other operational details that bring the "Dora" to life and give it the authentic look of a late war machine.
