The Ward LaFrance M1000 Series 5 recovery vehicle was one of the US Army's most important support vehicles during World War II. It was designed to be a rugged and reliable platform capable of handling heavy armored vehicles in challenging battlefield conditions. Built on a 6×6 chassis and equipped with a Continental six-cylinder engine, it could tow tanks, self-propelled guns and trucks. The Series 5 version, introduced in 1943, featured an upgraded hydraulic crane, a military cab with a canvas roof and a folding windshield. Due to its versatility, it served on both the European and Pacific battlefields, where it was an indispensable element of logistical support.
The Thunder Model 1/35th scale bonus kit features a highly detailed model of this machine, complete with resin crew figures and a 3D printed composite cockpit overlay to enrich the scenic possibilities. The model includes ten frames with approximately 700 parts, clear parts, photo-etched components, 3D printed parts, a vacuum-formed cockpit canvas, authentic ropes and chains, and five decal options. The detailed chassis, cab interior and precision-engineered crane allow for a faithful replica of the recovery vehicle that played a key role in maintaining the combat capability of the Allied forces.
