In 1943, the Ukrainian city of Kharkov was the scene of heavy fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army, with the city changing hands several times. The urbanised environment became the scene of intense deployment of armoured vehicles, infantry and support units. While German forces used the proven StuG III Ausf. G to directly support infantry on the city streets, civilian infrastructure such as trams often formed the backdrop to the ruined urban environment.
