The Renault FT became the groundbreaking type of the First World War and profoundly influenced tank design worldwide. Its concept of a rear-engined, mid-mounted fighting compartment and fully pivoting turret became a standard that has endured to the present day. One of the lesser known but significant variants was the FT 75 BS, equipped with a short 75mm howitzer designed for direct infantry support. This version was developed in response to the need to destroy fortified positions, machine gun nests and light fortifications for which the standard FT armament was inadequate. The howitzer provided greater firepower, albeit at the cost of limited turret space and lower cadence. The FT 75 BS saw service at the end of World War I and in the post-war years, when it was used by the French Army and some smaller nations, among others.
