The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a light deck fighter aircraft that served in the Japanese Imperial Navy from 1940 until the end of World War II. In the early years of the war, the "Zero" was considered the best deck fighter in the world. Its exceptional maneuverability, long range and powerful armament earned it a reputation as an invincible machine. The A6M2 Model 21 version was the first mass-produced variant and featured folding wingtips that allowed safer operations from aircraft carrier decks. This version became a symbol of Japanese air dominance in the early stages of the Pacific War.

The A6M2 became famous on 7 December 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor, where its speed and maneuverability took the American defenders by surprise. Its lightweight design and lack of armor to protect the pilot and fuel tanks were later a major disadvantage in combat with more modern Allied fighters. Nevertheless, the A6M2 Zero was a key tool of the Japanese offensive, and its legacy influenced many other aircraft designs.
