USS Atlanta (CL-51), the first unit of her class, entered service in 1941 as a US Navy anti-aircraft light cruiser. She carried an unusually powerful armament of 127mm all-purpose guns, making her a specialized escort cruiser designed to defend carrier alliances. In 1942 she was deployed in intense fighting in the South Pacific, particularly during the Guadalcanal campaign. It was here that she played a vital role during the dramatic night battle of Savo Island, where she engaged in heavy combat with Japanese forces and was eventually damaged to the point that she had to be abandoned. Nevertheless, Atlanta earned a reputation as a resilient and fighting ship that could withstand even the extreme conditions of night naval combat.
