1/32 Spitfire XIV (conv.) recommended for Laminar Flow Design (conv. Tamiya)
Yahu Models 1/32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV Laminar Flow Design is a conversion set for modifying Tamiya 1:32 scale model kits. It allows the conversion of a standard Spitfire Mk.XIV into an experimental variant with laminar wing wrapping, which was tested as part of aerodynamics research during World War II. The kit requires the Tamiya Spitfire Mk.XIV base model (sold separately). The package does not include the paint or glue needed for assembly.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV was one of the RAF's finest fighter aircraft in the final phase of World War II. Powered by the powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, it achieved higher speeds and better climbthan the earlier Merlin-powered versions and was capable of taking on German machines such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D and the rocket-powered Me 163. In addition to series production, experimental programmes were also underway to further increase performance. One of these was research into laminar wrapping, an aerodynamic principle designed to reduce air resistance and increase the aircraft's top speed. As part of this research, special wings with modified profiles were tested on some Spitfires to provide smoother airflow over the surface. Although these experiments did not make it into series production, they represent an interesting chapter in the history of fighter aircraft development and show how intensive work was done to improve even proven designs.
The Yahu Models 1:32 scale conversion kit allows modelers to convert a standard Tamiya Mk.XIV Spitfire to this experimental variant with laminar wing wraps. The kit includes modified wing parts and other components needed for the conversion, and requires the basic Tamiya Spitfire Mk.XIV kit (sold separately). The 1:32 scale offers plenty of room for detail work and allows the subtle differences in wing profile from the standard version to stand out. For modellers interested in lesser known variants of famous aircraft or those interested in aviation historyresearch, this conversion is an opportunity to build a unique piece that is not found in the standard kit range.
Painting can be based on period RAF schemes - typically dark green and grey on the uppergreen on the upper surfaces, grey on the lower, or later schemes with dark blue and grey. Experimental machines often carried minimal markings or special research unit identification codes. Weathering should be appropriate to the operating environment - aircraft intended for testing were usually not as worn as frontline machines, but traces of operation (exhaust stains, scuffs around the cockpit, light soiling) would give the model an authentic appearance. The package does not include paint or glue needed for assembly.
