A Brief History: The "Spandau" LMG 08/15
The LMG 08/15 (commonly referred to by Allied pilots as the "Spandau" after the arsenal where many were produced) was the standard fixed armament for German fighter aircraft during World War I.
Development and Design: Derived from the heavy, water-cooled MG 08 ground gun, the aviation version was heavily modified to save weight. The heavy water jacket was replaced by a distinctive perforated air-cooling sleeve. Since the aircraft was constantly moving through cold air at high altitudes, the airflow alone was sufficient to prevent the barrel from overheating.
Combat Application: The Spandau became legendary due to its integration with synchronization gear (interrupter gear). This allowed the pilot to fire the machine guns directly through the spinning propeller arc without hitting the blades.
Typically mounted in pairs directly in front of the cockpit, these guns were the "teeth" of the most famous German "Kanoniere" (Aces). They powered the deadliest fighters of the Great War, including:
-
Fokker Dr.I (The Red Baron’s Triplane)
-
Fokker D.VII (Considered the best German fighter of the war)
-
Albatros D.III and D.V
-
Pfalz D.III
The reliability and rapid fire of the twin Spandau setup defined aerial dogfighting for a generation and remains an iconic symbol of WWI aviation history.
