1/32 Heinkel He 162 A-2 Salamander

The Heinkel He 162 "Salamander" (also known as "Volksjäger" - people's fighter) was one of the most remarkable projects of the late phase of World War II. It was developed in response to a critical shortage of conventional fighter aircraft and experienced pilots in 1944, when the Luftwaffe faced massive Allied air superiority. The concept was for a simple, quickly produced jet that could be flown by less experienced pilots. The design used available materials, including wood, and minimized the use of strategic alloys. The BMW 003 engine was mounted on the back of the fuselage, giving the machine a distinctive appearance. Although the He 162 achieved remarkable performance and over 300 were produced by the end of the war, operational deployment was limited and the effect on the course of combat minimal.
