The Vought F4U Corsair is one of the most iconic fighter aircraft of the U.S. Naval Air Forces and Marine Corps during World War II. Characterized by an inverted gull wing, which allowed for a shorter undercarriage while maintaining sufficient room for a large propeller, it became one of the most successful fighters in the Pacific. The F4U-1D version was an improved variant of the basic F4U-1 type that received a strengthened rearwing flaps to carry bombs, missiles or additional tanks, taking it from a purely fighterfighter bomber capable of performing a wide range of tasks, from aerial combat to ground target attacks to airborne support. The F4U-1D was deployed en masse in the final phase of the Pacific campaign and later in Korea, where it proved its durability and versatility even in the era of the emerging jet aircraft.
