Tamiya 61046 F4U-1/2 Bird Cage Corsair in 1/48 scale represents the first production version of one of the most successful American WWII fighter aircraft. The F4U-1 was designed to be a fast and durable aircraft that achieved excellent flight performance thanks to its inverted wings and powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine. Although the Corsair was originally intended to serve on aircraft carriers, the first production run was deployed primarily with the US Marine Corps at land bases in the Pacific.

The "Bird Cage" version of the F4U-1/2 received its nickname due to the early type of cockpit with steel struts that reduced the pilot's view. The F4U-2 variant was converted to a night fighter, equipped with a radar in a shelter on the right wing.
