Mr. Hobby C609 Cleated Deck Color (10 ml) is a special paint designed for modeling wooden decks of Japanese ImperialNavy (IJN), which were an integral part of many heavy warships such as battleships and cruisers.

🚢 Historical Context and Purpose of the Shade

The decks of large vessels (e.g. Yamato class) were covered with thick wooden planks (often teak), which served to protect the steel hull from the sun and heat and provided a stable working surface. While US Navy decks were often left in the natural color of the wood, the IJN occasionally used a weak, transparent protective coatings or paints that faded over time and took on a characteristic gray-brown tone due to sea salt and sun exposure.

• Color Characteristic: The C609 shade is blended to simulate just this worn, light gray-brown tone of the wood, often with a hint of slight lightening. It is an ideal base colour for subsequent weathering techniques such as filtering and highlighting the plank texture.
