Starting in the mid-1930s, Germany sought to improve the mobility and mechanization of its army. One of the most important requirements of its ambitious development program was the adoption of a standard military chassis that would optimize off-road mobility. Among the various versions that were designed, medium off-road passenger vehicles—all-wheel-drive platforms built by Opelwerk and Auto Union—gained popularity. The Wehrmacht used them in various configurations as transport vehicles, tow trucks, and in reconnaissance roles. The Kfz. 12, manufactured by Horch (Horch was part of the Auto Union group along with Wanderer, Audi, and DKW), proved to be very reliable and robust in any operating environment thanks to its simple yet effective design.
