The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, known in the UK as the Kittyhawk, was an iconic American single-engine fighter and combat aircraft. Its development was based on the proven design of the Curtiss P-36 Hawk, which enabled its rapid entry into production and early service in 1938. It became the backbone of many Allied air forces during World War II and remained in active service until the end of the conflict. With 13,738 units produced (through November 1944), the P-40 became the third most produced American fighter, after the legendary P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt. Its rugged design and reliability made it popular across a variety of battlefields, from the deserts of North Africa to the jungles of the Pacific to the frigid Arctic.
