The M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle is the backbone of the U.S. mechanized infantry, developed under the long-standing Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV) program and entered service in 1981. Named after legendary World War II General Omar Bradley, the vehicle was designed with a dual purpose: to transport motorized infantry in combat and to provide direct fire support.
Unlike the older M113 transporter, the Bradley became a full combat vehicle. It features a traditional layout with the engine in the front, which enhances crew protection. The hull and turret are made of aluminum alloy reinforced with additional metals, which, depending on the version, provides protection against ammunition up to 14.5 mm caliber.
The main armament is the M242 Bushmaster 25mm automatic cannon, which is capable of penetrating the armour of lightly armoured vehicles. To combat heavily armoured targets, the vehicle is equipped with a BGM-71 TOW twin anti-tank guided missile launcher on the left side of the turret. The Bradley has proven its effectiveness and durability in combat, particularly during Operation Desert Storm and subsequent conflicts.
