The English Electric Canberra was one of the most pioneering British military aircraft of the early 1950s. It entered RAF service as one of the West's first operational jet bombers. The combination of lightweight construction, twin Rolls-Royce Avon engines and excellent flight characteristics enabled it to achieve performance that made the machine difficult to intercept by contemporary fighters.
The Canberra set several altitude and speed records and soon became an export success as well, serving in Australia, India, Chile, Peru and South Africa, to name a few. It was even produced under licence in the USA as the Martin B-57.
The B(I) Mk.8/12 versions were designed for low-altitude tactical strikes. They featured a modified nose, the ability to carry bombs and missiles, and were deployed during the Cold War in various attack and reconnaissance roles.
