The Republic P-47D Thunderbolt was one of the heaviest and best armed single-engine fighter aircraft of World War II. The D-11RE variant was equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, eight 12.7 mm machine guns, and the ability to carry bombs or rockets, allowing it to perform both escort and attack missions against ground targets. Aircraft of this version operated primarily in Europe, where they proved themselves as fighter-bombers.
The 56th Fighter Group, known as "Zemke's Wolfpack" after its commander, Hubert Zemke, achieved a remarkablesuccesses against the Luftwaffe and was one of the top-rated American fighter units in Europe.
