The MiG-29 (NATO code name "Fulcrum") was designed in the USSR as a modern fourth-generation multirole fighter aircraft. It entered the armament of the Polish Air Force after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and became an important part of air defence from the 1990s. The aircraft has retained its status even after the upgrades that enabled its integration into NATO structures.
