1/48 F6F-5 Hellcat cowling and cooling flaps (opened)
Aires 1/48 F6F-5 Hellcat cowling and cooling flaps (opened) is a resin set designed to improve 1:48 scale plastic kits of Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat. It includes a detailed engine cowling and open cooling flaps that replace standard plastic parts and allow you to display the aircraft with the engine compartment open. Suitable for modellers who want to increase the detail and realism of their model. The package does not include the paint or glue needed for assembly.
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was one of the most successful fighter aircraft of the US Navy during World War II. Designed as a response to Japanese fighters, notably the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it became the backbone of US Navy deck aviation from 1943 onwards, thanks to its combination of rugged construction, powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine and good manoeuvrability. The F6F-5 version, which appeared in 1944, brought a number of improvements including stronger armour, better armament and improved engine cooling systems. Hellcats dominated air combat in the Pacific and accounted for the majority of U.S. airmen's kills in the area.
The Aires add-on kit is designed for modelers who want to add an open engine compartment with detailed cooling flaps to their 1:48 scale F6F-5 Hellcat. Standard plastic parts kits often show these elements only when closed or with limited detail. Aires' resin version offers more precise molding, finer panel engraving and more realisticmore accurate depiction of the cooling flap mechanisms in the open position, allowing insight into the engine compartment and highlighting the technical side of the aircraft.
Open cooling flaps were a common operating condition on the Hellcat during parking, warm-up engine, or during ground operations when adequate cooling of the powerful radial engine was required. This detail gives the model an authentic look and offers the possibility of combining it with other aftermarket engine or cockpit kits. The set is compatible with common F6F-5 plastic scale kits:48 (such as those from Eduard, Hobby Boss or Trumpeter) and requires basic experience working with resin - sanding, fitting parts and bonding with instant glue or two-part epoxy.
For the final look, it is recommended to use shades of Navy Blue Grey (ANA 623) for the exterior surfaces and interior green or black tones for the engine compartment, complemented by to accentuate metal surfaces, oil marks and service wear consistent with intensive deck duty in the tropical Pacific environment. Package does not include paint or adhesives required for assembly.
