Flying Cloud was one of the most famous clippers of the 19th century and became a symbol of the peak era of fast commercial sailing ships. After launching in 1851, she became famous for her record-breaking voyages between the east and west coasts of the United States during the California Gold Rush. Her slender hull, large sail area and advanced design made her one of the fastest ships of her time, and her records remained unbroken for many years.
