Historical Context – The End of the Deadliest Conflict in History
World War II in Europe came to an end on May 8, 1945, when Nazi Germany signed an unconditional surrender. The first signing took place on May 7 in Reims, France, where German General Alfred Jodl signed the document in front of the Allied High Command led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The surrender was reaffirmed the next day in Berlin to acknowledge the role of all major Allied powers. May 8 has since been recognized across Europe as a day to remember the end of the war and the return of peace.
