The Northrop P-61 was a three-seat, twin-engine, night-fighter aircraft with a twin-plane redwing and retractable landing gear, designed for operations from ground bases. The prototype was flown in May 1942. The aircraft was made entirely of metal, first of magnesium alloys, later of duralumin. The fuselages of semi-sparred construction were reinforced with metal frames. The crew cabin, located in the central part of the fuselage, had a crew of three. The pilot was seated in the front section, with the deck gunner behind him and the radar operator at the end. In the non-towered versions, the radar operator was moved to the gunner's cabin and an additional seat was placed at the rear. The entire cabin was armoured. The P-61 received an SCR-720 airborne radar with a range of 10 km, located in the nose of the fuselage and linked to an IFF (Identification of Foreigners) device. Radar data was received in the radar operator's cabin, which sat in the rear of the fuselage. Armament consisted of four 12.7mm machine guns in a remote-controlled turret, which all versions of the aircraft did not have, and four 20mm cannons in the fuselage. Each crew member had a sight; the pilot used it in typical mistaken attacks when the enemy's direction of flight coincided with that of his own aircraft. In other cases, the gunner on board, who was also the gun turret operator, led the fire. If it was necessary to defend against a rear attack, the radar operator assumed the duties of gunner and gun turret operator. In addition, some machines, operating mainly in Europe, carried out attacks using bombs, unguided rockets or napalm tanks. Technical data: length: 15.11 m, wingspan: 20.12 m, height: 4.47 m, maximum speed: 589 km/h, rate of climb: 112.9 m/s, maximum range: 3,060 km, practical ceiling: 10,600 m, armament: fixed - 4 M2 machine guns of 12.7 mm calibre and 4 Hispano cannons of 20 mm calibre, suspended - up to 2,880 kg of bombs or 6 HVAR missile launchers of 127 mm calibre.
