Information about the original:
The LTV A-7 Corsair II was designed and entered service in the first half of the 1960s in response to a specific request from the U.S. Navy to develop a new light attack aircraft for use on aircraft carriers that could replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the piston-engine-powered Douglas A-1 Skyraider. The design of the new aircraft was directly derived from the Vought F-8 Crusade. Its distinctive features included a large air intake at the front beneath the cockpit, swept wings with a 35° angle—which could be folded to facilitate its use on aircraft carriers as much as possible—and a modern head-up display, which significantly improved its operational effectiveness. Thanks to its wing pylons, it could be armed with an impressive arsenal ranging from conventional bombs to guided bombs such as the Paveway and air-to-ground missiles. The A-7E was the last version produced for the U.S. Navy and featured even greater operational capabilities, including the ability to use Harpoon anti-ship missiles and AGM-88 HARM missiles to destroy radar systems.
